Lefebvre Sarrut

Lefebvre Sarrut is a French group and a leader in legal and tax knowledge, structured around three main activities: professional publishing, training, and software solutions.

The group is actively committed to research and innovation by integrating cutting-edge technologies to meet the evolving needs of its clients.

Customer Challenge

Lefebvre Sarrut's challenge is first and foremost about applications. Its legacy applications, often monolithic and built on outdated technologies, have to be partly redesigned to fit a cloud-native environment on AWS.

Their complexity comes from specific technical dependencies and stateful behavior: they keep their state locally, whereas a container must be able to be stopped and recreated at any time. That state has to be moved out of the applications and into AWS services such as S3 and RDS.

Not every application requires the same effort. Some can be moved almost as they are, others need refactoring or splitting. The right path therefore has to be decided application by application, without service disruption.

This transformation comes with a change of tooling: CI/CD pipelines to modernize, infrastructure to automate, monitoring with Prometheus and Grafana, and upskilling teams on Kubernetes.

Move2Cloud Approach

The best approach to modernizing Lefebvre Sarrut's legacy applications is a phased one, which starts from the applications themselves and validates each choice on a pilot before scaling up:

Move2Cloud Approach
Application audit and mapping: Auditing the legacy applications is the first step: technologies, dependencies, constraints and how each one handles its state. This mapping makes it possible to prioritize the applications that are simple to migrate and to set migration goals such as scalability and resilience.
One path per application: Simple applications can be migrated with a lift-and-shift approach, while more complex ones need refactoring or splitting into microservices. Making this choice application by application avoids both rewriting everything and moving everything as-is.
From stateful to stateless: Applications are adapted to follow the principles of stateless containers: files go to Amazon S3, data to Amazon RDS, and configuration moves out of the code. A container can then be replaced without losing information.
Reliable container images: Each application is packaged as a Docker image. Container security tools such as Trivy or Aqua Security are integrated to scan these images and ensure they are reliable before any deployment.
Deployment on Kubernetes (EKS on AWS): Containerized applications are deployed on high-performing, autoscaling Amazon EKS clusters and orchestrated with tools such as Helm. The required AWS infrastructure is created with Terraform modules and Terragrunt, for version control and repeatable setup.
CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins: CI/CD pipelines are modernized with Jenkins. Automating deployments reduces human error and speeds up delivery of the redesigned applications.
Pilot project, load tests and monitoring: A pilot project should be launched to test the solution and identify the adjustments needed. Load and scalability tests check that applications meet business requirements, monitored with Prometheus, Grafana and AWS CloudWatch.
Phased rollout and team support: The remaining applications are migrated progressively, building on lessons from earlier phases. DevOps and development teams are trained on Kubernetes and AWS, with a change management plan to standardize practices.
Move2Cloud Approach

Conclusion

Modernizing Lefebvre Sarrut's legacy applications is above all work on the applications themselves: choosing the right path for each one, moving state out of containers, then validating on a pilot before scaling up. This phased approach leads to a scalable, resilient infrastructure on Kubernetes and AWS, without service disruption.
